Berlin Patrol 2012
We did a lot - saw a lot, went many places...........and walked from 5 to 10 kilometers each day. Join us on these pages and hopefully next year, you will join us in person in 2013. As we said - some of these places will be dropped from our 2013 Berlin Patrol for obvious reasons.
We packed a lot into our first day
- Saturday 1 September. You will see some photos of upscale shops
and we did this to show the wives that we do much more on our 'Patrols'
than just dig around in old bunkers, submarines and historical sites.
Sunday 2 September..........a
bunker that calls us to explore. What is beyond this door?
Not only a bunker, but much more in Berlin just waiting for the
Monday 3 September........the "Love
Nest" of Dr. Josef Goebbels; the sunken barracks of the Soviet
Kampfgrüppe; the man-made lakes on the property of the headquarters of
Großadmiral Karl Dönitz; the above-ground bunker compound of the
Kriegsmarine Headquarters; the deep underground bunker for Dönitz; and
the house in which he lived.
Tuesday 4 September - who lived in
this house? It is on the Stutzpunkt (the base) of the 5th
Panzerkorps. Maybe that will help you guess.
Wednesday 5 September - The
Führerbunker, Police Headquarters, the place of execution for von
Stuaffenberg and several conspirators at the top of Operation Valkyrie
and much more.
Thursday 6 September - Back into
Berlin.....to the remaining section of the Berlin Wall then to the
Olympic Stadium and eventually to the Olympic Village
Friday 7 September - we are in the
devastated town of Küstrin on the banks of the Oder River. One of
the most fierce artillery and armor battles in history took place here
in the closing weeks of World War Two. It was in this historic
town that Friederich the Great, when just a young prince, was to be
