the Sea Strainer

On 4 June 1944, the USS GUADALCANAL Task Force caught U-505 and forced her to the surface.  Before abandoning ship, the cover to the sea strainer was removed (photo above right) and the valve was opened to the sea by L.I. (Engineering Officer) Hauser, so a solid eight-inch stream of water was pouring into the boat to scuttle her before the U.S. Navy could capture her.  After the boat was secured by the boarding party, which included WAYNE PICKELS (768-1988), "LUKE" boarded the boat, saw the problem and calmly closed the sea valve and put the cap back on the sea strainer, saving the boat.
