Of all the world’s cities, St. Petersburg, Russia ranks as one of the most magnificent. The gold domes of the cathedrals ARE gold, real gold. Ten to twenty pounds of hammered gold adorn each of the domes of the cathedrals around this city while hundreds of works of fine art are on the walls. St. Petersburg was nicknamed the Venice of the North as it is a city laid out on a maze of small islands at the Gulf of Finland at the eastern end of the Baltic Sea. Under Peter the Great, this land was conquered so that Russia could have a seaport and once the area was secure, he ordered that the place should be made the most magnificent city of Europe and that his capital should be there. You will see many beautiful cathedrals, museums and palaces on this DVD.
We tour the Summer Palace and the Winter Palace as well as Petroveredts (Peter’s Place) and we visit the cruiser AURORA, which fired the signal shot to start the Bolshevik Revolution in 1918.
Peter the Great had not one, but two patron saints – St. Peter and St. Paul, and so he built the fortress of St. Peter and St. Paul as the first walled bastion of the city. This DVD takes you through this huge place.
There is a lot to see on this hour-long DVD. You’ll love it.
