Kurt Rebs was a sailor aboard U-456 when that boat torpedoed and
damaged HMS EDINBOROUGH in the North Sea, causing the cruiser to
lose a lot of its speed. A trio of German destroyers caught the cruiser
and although two of them were destroyed, the cruiser also went to the bottom -
carrying hundreds of tons of gold with it - the Soviet gold reserves were being
transported to England for safe keeping.
Kurt Rebs
Don't rush out to salvage the gold - it's already been done, even from 800 feet
down in the North Sea. After serving aboard U-456 for some
time, Kurt was transferred to U-20.
