Helmut Witte
Korvettenkapitän Helmut Witte began his service aboard the light cruiser KÖLN
on several patrols into Spanish waters, then was First Watchkeeping Officer with
the torpedo boats. He then transferred to destroyers and was aboard Z22
when it was sunk in the April 1940 Norway Action. He then transferred to
the U-Bootwaffe and was Watchkeeping Officer and Kommandantenschüler (Commander
in Training) aboard U-107 under Günther Hessler. He then
became Skipper of U-159 and with that boat, he sank twenty-one
ships totaling 114,084 gross tons. He was decorated with the Knights
Cross.
