Member #45 tells of his life first in the German Merchant Marine and how their ship was shadowed by a US Navy task force BEFORE the USA was in the war, and the task force continually broadcast their position until their ship was intercepted by Canadian destroyers and sunk. He and the crew were interned on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay but he escaped and went to Japan aboard a Japanese merchant ship before the USA was in the war. From there, he made his way back to Germany and joined the Kriegsmarine and went into the U-Bootwaffe. He tells about his time aboard U-405 until he shipped aboard U-181 and he recalls how he and other Germans were treated by the Japanese in their POW camp after the German surrender.
