United States Navy.  He was a radioman aboard USS GUADALCANAL when they captured U-505.  Later he was a radioman aboard USS RANDOLPH when it took a Kamikaze hit right in his radio compartment but fortunately Jim was on the hangar deck watching a movie.  The guys on duty in the radio compartment were not so fortunate as they were incinerated
