In July 1939, the German military organized the 1^st War Veterans gathering ever.  Hundreds of special trains brought hundreds of thousands of troops, veterans and citizens to honor their soldiers, sailors and airmen.  They also honored the German military of the past as well as their allies, the Italians and Japanese.  The city of Kassel was turned into a gigantic bivouac area where participants slept in huge tents, washed in field kitchens and hundreds of eighty liter kettles bubbled with oatmeal every morning.
