Imagine sitting in the comfort of your living room and going one on one with some of World War Two’s most deadly adventurers.  The stories are so vivid you can smell the cordite and almost feel the depth charges.  A WW II veteran tells us – I have lived in some of these diesel boats; experienced the foul air so bad you couldn’t light a match (yes, they allowed smoking then).  I have experienced heat in excess of 100º for days on end, weather so bad that everything was wet and moldy.  Food cannot be prepared so if you’re not seasick, all there is to eat is baloney and cheese (horse cock and choke ass).  It takes a special kind of man to endure this environment.
It was a heroic time on both sides and now, with the memories of Kretschmer, Topp, Dönitz, Hardegen and so many others who fought this war, combined with some who were on the Allied side, we are beginning to get the perspective we need, as people interested in accurate history, to understand truly what went on and how it felt to the dedicated men who bore the burden and gave their all.
