HERBERT A. WERNER (18-LIFE-1983)
Kriegsmarine; U-Boat Commander
![]() | HERBERT WERNER commanded several U-Boats including U-415 and his last boat, U-953 but he is best known for the book he wrote, “IRON COFFINS“. Anyone who has read this book will agree – it is far and away the very best book on the U-Bootwaffe ever written by a participant in the war.

U-415 carried several turmabzeichen (tower emblems) including this one, depicting a plane they shot down. | The emblem of the town of Bad Harzburg was also on the tower, as that town had adopted the boat and crew.
